Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Season 3 Episode 1 has introduced a host of new characters, including Kokushibo and Sumiyoshi Kamado. While several characters have appeared or were referenced in previous seasons, Sumiyoshi stands out due to his unmistakable resemblance to the main protagonist, Tanjiro Kamado. So who is Sumiyoshi Kamado in Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Season 3?
According to the manga, Sumiyoshi Kamado is actually Tanjiro’s ancestor who was born over 400 years ago. Although his exact age is unknown, Sumiyoshi looks to be around the same age as Tanjiro, who is fifteen years old in the present timeline. Despite his similarities to Tanjiro, Sumiyoshi has longer hair that is tied up in a ponytail and does not have a birthmark or wound on his forehead. He is also married with two children, including a newborn, and works as a coal merchant.
In terms of personality, Sumiyoshi shares many traits with Tanjiro. He is kind, friendly, humble, and respectful to all who visit his home. He even welcomes Yoriichi Tsugikuni, the strongest Demon Slayer in the world, with open arms. Sumiyoshi’s loyalty to Yoriichi is unwavering, and he does not get offended even when Yoriichi calls him a “useless man.” However, he does become upset when Yoriichi’s last visit makes him realize that it will be the final time he sees his friend.
Sumiyoshi and Yoriichi’s bond is rooted in the fact that Yoriichi once saved Sumiyoshi’s life. While the exact circumstances of their meeting are unknown, it is likely that Yoriichi rescued Sumiyoshi from a demon attack. When Yoriichi was kicked out of the Demon Slayer Corps for failing to kill Muzan Kibutsuji, he went to Sumiyoshi’s house. Sumiyoshi was the only person who could listen to Yoriichi’s problems. At the time, Yoriichi was alone as his wife and unborn child were killed by demons. Sumiyoshi could only provide a listening ear, but it was enough to comfort Yoriichi in his time of need.
Sumiyoshi also witnessed Yoriichi perform the Hinokami Kagura dance, which inspired Tanjiro’s own Water Breathing and Hinokami Kagura technique. Overall, Sumiyoshi Kamado is a vital character in the Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba world, and his story adds to the depth and complexity of the series.
