Sony is reportedly developing a new version of PlayStation 5 called PS5 Pro

Sony allegedly has plans to launch a new version of PlayStation 5 called PS5 Pro by the end of 2024, according to a new report from Insider Gaming published on Wednesday, March 15, 2023. The report, citing an unnamed source, did not provide many details about what hardware improvements might be present in the PS5 Pro. Nonetheless, it claimed that it may provide an improvement in game’s ray tracing effects, based on a patent filed by Mark Cerny from Sony.

It’s worth noting that there’s a history of these rumors. After releasing the PS4 in 2013, Sony launched the PS4 Pro console in 2016. It includes a more powerful processor and GPU that enhance game resolution support from 1080p to 4K with HDR. It also has a larger hard drive.

Insider Gaming also claimed, citing an unnamed source, that Sony would launch a new version of the current PS5 console but with a removable disk drive by the end of 2023.

Sony’s latest hardware release is the PS VR2 virtual reality headset for PS5 that supports more than 30 games. It costs $549.99. Sony is reportedly developing PS5 Pro console for a late 2024 launch.

Although Insider Gaming could not confirm its report at present, they anticipated that there would likely be an expo to showcase games, including Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, and talk about its upcoming hardware towards the end of 2023.

As for the PS5 Pro device, it seems like it’s still to be seen. The current generation console market appears to have just stabilized after chip shortages, and developers still need to release the previous generation to sell more units. Sony expects a massive FY23 for console unit sales (around 30.5 million units), so a massive clearance of previous-generation games in the spring of 2024 is logical.
