There is news that Izui Tengen in Kimetsu no Yaiba has retired as a Hashira after successfully defeating the demon moon at the sixth anniversary. Although he lost his hand and eyes, it was not the only reason for his retirement as he found a new meaning in life. He also made a promise to one of his wives, Hinatsuru, that he would retire from the Demon Slayer Corps after defeating one of the demon moons.
Tengen grew up in a shinobi family which made him experience intense training from his father. His father’s strict upbringing caused a strain on Tengen, which then led him to rebel in his own way, including joining the Demon Slayer Corps. After he defeated one of the demon moons, something that had not happened for the past 100 years, he felt like he had achieved something meaningful. Despite losing his hand and eyes, he had no regrets. As a shinobi and demon slayer, his hard work enabled him to retire peacefully with his three wives.
Due to Tengen’s condition, he was almost certain to retire. However, he can still fight against regular demons but not against demon moon or tasks as a Hashira. The glory days of Tengen and the great battles are over, and he will retire as a Hashira. Meanwhile, the battle against Gyutaro cost him his left hand and eye. However, there is something to be thankful for, which is the growth process of Tanjiro, Inosuke, and Zenitsu as demon slayers. In the battle against Gyutaro and Daki, they showed that they have the potential to become future Hashira.
The fact that there are potential candidates within the Demon Slayer Corps allowed Tengen to take his retirement. He expressed to his fellow Hashira, Iguro Obanai, that Tanjiro, Zenitsu, and Inosuke only need time to mature their fighting techniques. The retirement of Tengen marks the end of an era and the beginning of new ones for the Demon Slayer Corps.
