Captain Nathan Algren (Tom Cruise) is an alcoholic haunted by his memories of the atrocities committed during the American Indian Wars. He accepts a job offer from Colonel Bagley (Tony Goldwyn) to train the Japanese Imperial Army, created by a wealthy Japanese businessman, Omura (Masato Harada), to quell a samurai rebellion against the new emperor of Japan.

Algren’s training of the new army proves unsuccessful, and they suffer defeat when they are forced to fight skilled samurai warriors. Algren is captured, but instead of killing him, the samurai take him to their village. Algren recovers and learns about Japanese culture, gaining the respect of some of the samurai, including their leader, Katsumoto (Ken Watanabe).

Katsumoto takes Algren to Tokyo to meet with the emperor. They find that the imperial army is well-equipped and prepared for battle. During the meeting, Katsumoto realizes that the emperor is a young boy, and he is being used as a puppet by Omura to maintain his power. The emperor arrests Katsumoto for carrying a sword in public, and Omura tries to bribe Algren to betray Katsumoto. Algren refuses, and Omura orders his execution.
