Gothel keeps Rapunzel locked up in a tall tower hidden in a forest and raises her as her own daughter. She tells Rapunzel that the world outside is dangerous and forbids her to leave the tower. But Rapunzel is daring and curious, and she dreams of seeing the floating lights that appear in the sky every year on her birthday.

One day, a thief named Flynn Rider breaks into the tower to hide from the guards who are chasing him. Rapunzel is hesitant at first but soon strikes a deal with him. She promises to return his stolen crown if he takes her to see the floating lights. Thus begins their adventure outside the tower, which becomes a journey of self-discovery for Rapunzel.
