Beowulf is a 2007 animated 3D fantasy film directed by Robert Zemeckis, known for his phenomenal work in Forrest Gump (1994). Neil Gaiman and Roger Avary collaborated with Zemeckis in creating an epic story with visually stunning animation. The movie, with its well-crafted plot and suitable duration, is a treat for those who enjoy Norse mythology and Neil Gaiman’s previous works, such as Norse Mythology.

Synopsis

Beowulf (Ray Winstone), a legendary knight, together with his army, went to Denmark in the year 507 to help King Hrothgar (Anthony Hopkins). Upon arrival, Beowulf was assigned to kill Grendel (Crispin Glover), a hideous troll-like monster that indiscriminately killed and devoured anyone, including Hrothgar’s soldiers. During a feast in Heorot, Grendel attacked the people inside, prompting Beowulf to fight the monster. He vowed to kill Grendel in a bare-hand battle, knowing that the monster’s ears were extremely sensitive. Beowulf produced loud noise to distract Grendel and focused on its ears until the monster’s movements slowed down. Finally, Grendel tried to retreat, but its arm got caught in the door and was severed by Beowulf. He brought Grendel’s arm as proof of his victory, and Hrothgar thanked him by giving a golden horn that symbolized his victory over the dragon god Fafnir.

Grendel’s mother, portrayed by Angelina Jolie, returned to seek revenge. She killed all of Beowulf’s soldiers while Beowulf and Wiglaf (Brendan Gleeson) were away. Hrothgar warned Beowulf about Grendel’s mother, a monster they should be wary of. Unferth (John Malkovich), Hrothgar’s advisor, gave Beowulf a sword named Hrunting to fight the monster. Beowulf entered the cave alone, leaving Wiglaf outside, and found Grendel’s mother, who appeared as an attractive woman with a gold-covered body. Beowulf tried to strike her, but her enchantment trapped him. She proposed a deal with him that he would become the king if he gave her the golden horn and a son. Beowulf accepted her offer, gave her what she wanted, and returned to Heorot, boasting that he killed Grendel and his mother. In reality, he lost the golden horn and embraced his fate, being the next victim of the monster’s curse.
