Synopsis:
Sunday’s Illness is a drama film that was released in 2018, directed by Ramón Salazar. The movie starred Bárbara Lennie and Susi Sánchez. Anabel, a wealthy old woman, held a party at her house where she saw a server that seemed familiar to her. The server gave her a bundle of papers, and the next day, she met the server again. It turned out that the server was her daughter, Chiara, whom she abandoned when she was only eight years old. Now, they have been separated for 35 years. In their reunion, Chiara asked Anabel to spend ten days with her, which Anabel hesitated to agree at first. However, she finally agreed to her daughter’s request because of her husband’s intervention.
Chiara brought Anabel to her house on top of a mountain. During the first few days, Chiara did not have any plans for Anabel and mostly left her alone. However, as time passed, they started to talk and bond. They went to the movies and to a dance, where Chiara got drunk and danced with a man. When they arrived home, Chiara got sick and vomited, telling Anabel that she was going to die. But Anabel thought it was just a joke. Chiara fell asleep, and Anabel discovered that she had been sleeping for two days.
The next day, Chiara gave Anabel a tea and mushroom concoction that made Anabel unconscious. When she woke up, Chiara showed her some pictures of her childhood. Anabel then found out that Chiara was ill. Later on, Chiara became angry and hurt Anabel, resulting in a wound on her forehead. Anabel, knowing her daughter’s condition, didn’t take her anger to heart and offered to care for her daughter instead. They played together in the snow and even went to the hospital when Chiara fainted. At the hospital, Anabel learned about the severity of her daughter’s illness.
After recovering, Chiara asked Anabel to leave, but Anabel refused. Chiara whispered her request to Anabel, and Anabel left to fulfill her daughter’s wish by visiting Chiara’s father in France, whom she thought was already dead. Anabel met with Mathieu, Chiara’s father, in a restaurant. After their conversation, Anabel returned home to find Chiara dying in her house. Anabel took her daughter to the lake, and for the first time since they reunited, Chiara called Anabel, “Mother.” She then asked Anabel to drown her in the lake. Despite her motherly instincts, Anabel poured a substance into the lake that caused Chiara to sleep and slowly die.
