The Core is a thrilling disaster movie about a catastrophic event that happens on Earth. The movie was released in 2003 and directed by Jon Amiel, known for his drama specialty. With an $85 million budget, the movie had to endure a loss as the total profits from its worldwide screening only amounted to $74 million.

The movie starts with strange occurrences on Earth that cause chaos. Upon investigating, scientists led by geophysicist Dr. Josh Keyes (Aaron Eckhart), Dr. Serge Leveque (TchĂ©ky Karyo), and Dr. Conrad Zimsky (Stanley Tucci) discover that the Earth’s magnetic field is problematic. The scientists soon realize that the liquid core responsible for keeping the Earth stable on its axis has stopped working. If they don’t find a way to make it work again, the Earth’s surface will vanish in a blink of an eye.

Meanwhile, the Earth begins to lose its ability to shield itself from the sun’s radiation, causing a direct exposure that incinerates anything in its path. To prevent this horrific event from happening, the United States government secretly supports the creation of a bore ship to go to the core and detonate a nuclear weapon to trigger the liquid core to work again.

Dr. Ed Brazzelton (Delroy Lindo) develops the bore ship using a special material called Unobtainium that can convert extreme heat energy into massive electrical energy. He also creates a laser-shaped super-strong bore instrument. Pilot NASA, Robert Iverson (Bruce Greenwood), and Rebecca Childs (Hilary Swank) are assigned to drive the multi-compartment bore ship named USS Virgil, which is launched into the Mariana Trench, the closest place to the Earth’s crust.

Additionally, a hacker named Theodore (DJ Qualls) is brought along to assist them in internet-related matters and communicate mission progress on land. USS Virgil begins to bore into the ground upon arrival at the Earth’s crust. However, the bore accidentally breaks through a crystal geode structure, damaging their primary weapon – the laser. They have no choice but to go down to the geode’s base to fix the ship, but an unexpected event occurs and kills Commander Robert.

Nevertheless, the tragedy they experienced was not in vain as they get the bore ship to the Earth’s core successfully. While examining the liquid core, the scientists realize that its formation is much harder than they thought. As such, they need to rethink their mission’s strategies to ensure everything goes according to plan. The team is then informed by Lieutenant General Thomas Purcell (Richard Jenkins) that they need to activate a secret weapon called DESTINI (Deep Earth Seismic Trigger Initiative) or The Internal Seismic Trigger, for another mission.

Theodore, however, is concerned because the first test they did with DESTINI caused the Earth’s rotation to stop. He decides to sabotage the system so that Jenderal Thomas cannot use it. Dr. Josh also worries that using this weapon might make things worse instead of saving the Earth. The surviving members of the team then begin to figure out how to stick to the plan and put explosives in place to trigger the core’s rotation through constructive wave interference at the right time.

Throughout the mission, their lives were at stake. Dr. Brazzelton and…
