SRIMULAT: The Impossible Challenge – First Act, is a highly anticipated film of 2022 that is definitely worth watching. It tells the journey of the most famous and legendary comedy group in Indonesia, Srimulat. The group always manages to bring laughter to its audiences, and the film version is no exception. Starring a host of young actors, Fajar Nugros successfully portrays the characters of Srimulat members. In addition, the main cast, including Bio One and Ibnu Jamil, all give their best performances in this film. However, the film is too focused on making people laugh, causing a lack of attention on the storyline.

Srimulat is a comedy group from Surakarta that has gained popularity for their unique Javanese-style comedy shows, performed in Teater Sriwedari. One day, Pak Teguh noticed the hidden talent of a young man named Gepeng, who frequently interrupted the children of Srimulat during their jokes. Despite being slapped by his father for doing so, Gepeng was given a chance and included in the comedy team performing in Jakarta for an event in front of the President. Upon arriving in Jakarta, the Srimulat team stays at Babeh Makmur’s rented house.

Gepeng soon meets Royani, a gorgeous girl that he falls in love with at first sight. He then visits Babeh Makmur’s house every day just to see Royani but knew his profession as a comedian may not be accepted by Royani’s family. Meanwhile, Pak Teguh has to return to Solo and hands over leadership to Pak Asmuni.

As the day of their show approaches, the Srimulat members begin to worry over their performance, including their appearance and stage persona. They desperately try to find ways to improve their characterizations, and each member embarks on their own journey of self-discovery. Pak Tarsan manages to improve his character by wearing a TNI uniform, and Pak Kabul finds inspiration from a group of transvestites, portraying the character Tessy. Mbak Nunung, on the other hand, wishes to have the same hairdo and charm as Titiek Puspa.

Moreover, the language barrier becomes a significant issue because Pak Asmuni forgot to mention that they had to perform in Indonesian. There was also an announcement that one member would be sent back to Solo. Panic sets in among all members as their Indonesian language skills are not up to par, causing them to feel insecure and worried about getting sent back.

On the day of their performance, each member is given their character outline, except for Gepeng, who is still waiting for Royani to finish getting ready. Despite the group giving their best comedic acts, including Pak Kabul’s debut as Tessy, they still fail to make the President laugh. Pak Asmuni hopes Gepeng can save the situation, but Gepeng and Royani arrive late when the show is already over.

SRIMULAT: The Impossible Challenge – First Act is an enjoyable comedy that showcases the talents of some of Indonesia’s finest entertainers. Fajar Nugros does an excellent job directing the movie, and the actors portray their respective roles with great humor and skill. However, the focus on humor at the expense of the storyline is the film’s main disadvantage. Fans of comedy with an Indonesian twist should definitely watch this movie.

It tells the story of the beloved comedy group, Srimulat, their preparations for a performance in front of the President, and the comedic struggles they face along the way.
