5 CM is a 2012 Indonesian drama film directed by Rizal Mantovani, with screenplay by Donny Dhirgantoro, Sunil Soraya, and Hilman Mutasi. The film stars Herjunot Ali, Raline Shah, Fedi Nuril, Pevita Pearce, Saykoji, and Denny Sumargo. It tells the story of a group of young friends who embark on a journey to chase their dreams.
The film begins with the introduction of the main characters, narrated by Zafran (Herjunot Ali), a poetic young man whose career is in a slump, causing his mother to become hypertensive. The other main characters are Genta (Fedi Nuril), Arial (Denny Sumargo), Riani (Raline Shah), and Ian (Igor Saykoji). The five of them have been best friends for 10 years and have never missed a weekend together. They spend their weekends together at Arial’s luxurious home, where they have everything they need for food, drinks, and hanging out.
One night, after finishing dinner, Arial invites his four friends to spend the weekend at his house. When they get together, Genta says that he is lucky to have friends like Arial, Zafran, Riani, and Ian, but he also realizes that he has no other close friends besides them. He thinks their circle might become boring if they keep doing the same things and hanging out with the same people. Genta suggests they all take a break from their friendship for three months so that they can explore their own lives without depending on each other.
Riani initially rejects the idea, but then agrees to try it out when Ian says he needs time to finish his thesis and the others want to give it a try. They agree to meet again after three months, on August 14, at a mysterious place that Genta has prepared for them. The promise is that it will be the happiest moment the five of them will ever experience.
After this, Arial, Genta, Ian, Riani, and Zafran go their separate ways without any communication. Out of the five of them, Ian is the one who suffers the most. He feels lost and unable to talk about his problems, especially his thesis that is always being rejected by his supervisor. Riani also feels lonely without her guy friends, so she tries to chat with strangers online, even though she knows it’s not a good idea.
Months pass, and Arial finally meets a beautiful girl at the gym, even though he’s always been afraid of approaching women. Genta is still busy pursuing his dream of succeeding in the event organizer business that he manages. After three months, they all meet again at the train station to travel from Jakarta to Malang and then to Mount Semeru to celebrate Indonesian Independence Day on August 17.
On the train, Ian tells his friends that he has finished his thesis and will continue his studies in Manchester. His friends are happy for him but sad because he will be far away. Meanwhile, Zafran and Dinda (Pevita Pearce), Arial’s younger sister, become closer.
When they arrive in Malang, they head straight for Mount Semeru to hike to the top of Mount Mahameru. The journey is not easy, as they face many challenges like Zafran’s injury, Genta and Ian running out of water, Arial’s hypothermia, and the difficult terrain. However, they persist and finally make it to the top. There, they celebrate Indonesian Independence Day and cherish their newfound wisdom and friendship.
In conclusion, 5 CM is a story about friendship, love, and the pursuit of dreams. The film portrays the struggles and challenges that young adults face while trying to achieve their goals. The cinematography and storytelling are exceptional, making the film a must-watch for all Indonesian movie lovers.
