Knowing, released in 2009, is an American disaster film that has successfully managed to stand out from other nature disaster films. The movie, directed by Alex Proyas, is a blend of science fiction and thriller genres. Knowing tells the story of how the arrival of extraterrestrial beings during a global catastrophe alters the lives of several people. The movie has gained the attention of many film enthusiasts.

The plot begins in 1959, with a primary school’s decision to preserve drawings of the future by students in a time capsule that will be opened 50 years later. However, one mysterious girl named Lucinda (Lara Robinson) writes a series of numbers instead of drawing images of the future. Lucinda’s paper is put in the capsule, and the capsule is buried.

50 years later, the time capsule is opened, and the present students take their respective drawings. One student, Caleb Koestler (Chandler Canterbury), receives Lucinda’s paper filled with numbers. Caleb gives the paper to his father, John Koestler (Nicolas Cage), who is an astrophysics professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Initially, John thinks that the numbers are random, but he soon discovers a pattern when he types them onto a search engine. The numbers Lucinda wrote turned out to be dates, death tolls, and geographic coordinates of events of natural disasters that have occurred in the last fifty years. Three events are yet to occur.
