The Eye released in 2002, a Hong Kong horror film directed by Pang Brothers, gets a remake in 2008 by David Moreau and Xavier Palud, with the same title and the central concept. The film venture produced by Vertigo Entertainment carries a budget of $12 million and casts Jessica Alba in the lead role. The Eye follows the story of Sydney, a blind violinist, who undergoes a corneal transplant and begins experiencing strange, haunting visions.

Plot

Sydney Wells (Jessica Alba) becomes blind at the age of five due to a firecracker accident during a Halloween party. She grows up as a blind woman, determined not to be defined by her disability. Sydney, now an accomplished violinist, living in Los Angeles, receives a corneal transplant through a surgery performed by Dr. Paul Faulkner (Alessandro Nivola), a friend and visual therapist, after her sister Helen Wells (Parker Posey) provides her with the chance. After the transplant, Sydney gains her sight, but with it comes unusual visions, including the ghosts of the donor and his or her death. The bizarre images and significant deja vu, including a recurring number 106, make Sydney question the origin of her transplanted eye.

Haunting Visions

The eye transplant begins to wreak havoc with Sydney’s psyche, and she seeks to discover the identity of the cadaver whose cornea she received. After conducting some research into her donor’s past, Sydney and Faulkner trace the eye back to a young woman who died a violent death after seeing the number 106 repeatedly. They learn that the woman could see “dead people,” and the eye now lets Sydney do the same. Drugged by her visions and her sister’s death, Sydney digs deeper into the past of the donor to stop the onslaught of hallucinations while investigating her death to discover their possible connection.
