Synopsis

Harper (Zoey Deutch) and Charlie (Glen Powell) are hardworking assistants for their respective bosses, Kirsten and Rick, who have no life outside of work. Their bosses’ constant demands have robbed them of their personal time, forcing them to cancel plans and even sacrifice their personal lives. One night, while on a food run for their bosses, Harper and Charlie cross paths, and a conversation ensues. They conclude that their bosses need to date or at least have some sort of life outside of work. They then hatch a plan to set the bosses up and make them fall in love so that the pressure on them reduces, and they can finally enjoy their lives without their bosses breathing down their necks.

Harper and Charlie begin their mission by arranging accidental breakfast meetings, lift encounters, and even attending a game together. In their attempt to know their bosses better, they compile a list of what they like and don’t like and strive to make them click.

Their plan succeeds, and both the bosses begin dating. Meanwhile, Harper struggles with her boss’s relentless demands while attempting to plan the wedding. Along the way, she discovers that her boss, Rick, is not as ideal as she thought. While picking up his credit card, she overhears him engaging in phone sex. It leads her to have a change of heart about the relationship, and she tries to keep them apart.

Review

Set It Up is a romantic comedy with a refreshing take on several clichés we encounter in romantic films. For starters, the film empowers the assistants and shows how demanding bosses rob their employees of their personal time. But the real treat of the film is the two lead actors, Powell and Deutch’s on-screen camaraderie. They both have great comic timing and display hilarious chemistry, making the audience root for them throughout the film.

The script is well-written and successfully balances the romance with comedy, making both aspects equally enjoyable. Moreover, the plot moves at a steady pace and keeps the audience hooked until the end.

The film tackles work and personal life balance and forces us to realize the importance of having a life outside of work. It subverts several workplace romances clichés by making the assistants take charge of their lives rather than letting their bosses dictate their schedules.

Conclusion

Set It Up is an excellent romantic comedy film that balances humor and romance with ease. Its clever script, memorable characters, and excellent performances make it worth watching. Through its endearing story, the film conveys a valuable message about work and life. If you’re looking for a feel-good movie that will make you laugh and leave you happy, Set It Up is the perfect pick.
