His Dark Materials Season 2 is the continuation of the adaptation of the popular fantasy fiction novel, The Golden Compass by author Philip Pullman. This season takes inspiration from the novel’s sequel, The Subtle Knife. The show stars Dafne Keen as Lyra Belacqua, Ruth Wilson as Marisa Coulter, James McAvoy as Asriel Belacqua, and Amir Wilson as Will Parry. In the first season’s conclusion, Lord Asriel sacrifices the life of Lyra’s friend Roger Parslow to open a portal to a parallel world at the pole. Lyra goes through the portal to find Asriel, while Will Parry hides from enemies and accidentally discovers a mysterious portal to a strange world.

When Lyra comes through the portal, she finds herself in a city called Cittagazze. There, she meets Will Parry, who had arrived a few days before, and is surprised to find Lyra’s daemon, Pan, can speak. In Will’s world, there are no daemons, and people do not have animal companions that can talk. Lyra and Will discover similarities between their worlds, such as having Oxford University.

They are warned by a group of children in Cittagazze that adults have left the town, and there are evil creatures called Spectres that absorb people’s souls when they reach adulthood. Meanwhile, witches prepare for war against the Magisterium, assigning Lee Scoresby, a balloon pilot (aeronaut), to find explorer Stanislaus Grumman.

In another scene, Marisa Coulter interrogates and tortures a captive witch, trying to learn the name of the “child of the prophecy” that the witches have kept secret. Before the witch can tell her, queen witch Ruta Skadi arrives and kills several crew members, including Cardinal Sturrock.

The show’s complexity increases as the story progresses, including elements such as witches, daemons, talking armored bears, and windows that open to parallel universes. His Dark Materials provides an enjoyable fantasy story with intriguing storylines and unique characters.
