Shocking Revelation in One Piece 1087: Luffy Was Dead All Along?

Could it be possible that Luffy had been dead all along? One Piece 1087 has left fans amazed after Eiichiro Oda revealed that Luffy’s life had already ended during his fight with Kaido at Onigashima. But, how come Luffy still appeared healthy if he was already dead? Find out the answer in this discussion of One Piece 1087.

Oda dropped an interesting hint in One Piece 1087 that revealed Luffy had already died before awakening his Devil Fruit power. This hint was also related to how Luffy could extend his final moments using the power of Awakening Nika. Unfortunately, the Straw Hat captain hasn’t realized this power yet up until this moment.

During the prolonged battle between Luffy and Kaido at Onigashima, a particular hint explained why Luffy truly died there. When Kaido finally defeated Luffy, Momonosuke said that he couldn’t hear the sound of the Straw Hat captain anymore. Until chapter 1087, Oda had proven that whenever someone’s voice couldn’t be heard, that person had already died. As a result, the disappearing voice was usually related to that person’s death.

Thus, Luffy had indeed died at the hands of Kaido, but strangely, he could rise again with a completely different power. Then, if that was true, how could Luffy die since he was still alive up until this point? Apparently, the hint showed that Awakening Hito Hito no Mi Nika could only be awakened if its user had died. But, it didn’t mean that Luffy was revived by his Devil Fruit’s Awakening power. Instead, the Awakening extended his remaining life span.

During Luffy’s fight with Kaido, there was a moment where he came out of Gear 5 mode and looked like a withered old man. The same thing happened after using Gear 5 in the Egghead arc. That always happened when Luffy used his Awakening for too long. Actually, that was Oda’s hint that Luffy’s current age was not as it seemed. Luffy had been confirmed to be 20 years old, and that was in line with his young-looking face and body. However, his real age was much older, even approaching 60-80-year-old grandpa age. Furthermore, in the Impel Down arc, Ivankov himself mentioned that Luffy’s age would decrease if he continued to live with his medicinal herbs.

Not only that, Oda had confirmed that Gear 2 would shorten Luffy’s lifespan. Until now, it was countless how many times Luffy had used Gear 2 that would reduce his age. If it was true, then Luffy’s adventure would become more exciting. Because he would risk his life, which wouldn’t be long, to become the Pirate King as soon as possible. It would also be an interesting parallel with Roger’s incurable illness. Does that mean Luffy would die at the end of One Piece? All of that would undoubtedly be answered in One Piece 1087 or the following chapters.
