Netflix Expands Its Gaming Commitment with Four New Titles
Netflix continues to explore the gaming industry by announcing four new game titles, highlighting the number of games in development for its mobile and cloud gaming services. All four games come from external studios, with Ubisoft collaborating again with Netflix to launch the Mighty Quest: Rogue Palace, an action roguelike adapted from the game Mighty Quest for Epic Loot, which debuted on April 18.
Meanwhile, Ustwo Games plans to release the full versions of both Monument Valley titles on Netflix in 2024, based on their partnership with Desta: The Memories Between. Netflix also partnered with Catalyst Black and Vainglory developer, Super Evil Megacorp, for the tie-in game to the still-unannounced IP for Netflix.
Netflix also confirmed its collaboration with Nanobit in another game based on the Too Hot to Handle show. Previously, the game tie-in for the show became Netflix’s most popular game. While Netflix understands the people’s love for games that relate to famous franchises and still has several titles in development, it will release a new collection of exciting games every month.
Leanne Loombe, vice president of External Game, confirmed that Netflix is currently working on 70 games with external developers and 16 titles in initial stages in its internal studio, with the primary goal of releasing curated new games each month. “It will require us to release various different games and take some risks, and not everything we launch will succeed,” Loombe said. “But everything’s going to be a big opportunity for us to continue developing our strategy and our approach to games to make sure that we’re delivering the most-played games to our members,” she added.
Netflix will continue to focus on mobile games that players can download from the App Store and Google Play Store before authenticating through Netflix, with the short-term focus on cloud gaming development. Loombe reiterated Netflix’s commitment to building a cloud gaming platform slowly and cautiously to ensure easy access to games on any screen, without friction, and provide accessibility into the gaming experience.
Netflix may not compete with Sony, Microsoft, or Nintendo directly, but it could become highly relevant in the mobile and cloud gaming space in the future.
