Warner Bros. Games has cancelled the open beta version of MultiVersus, a fighting game similar to Super Smash Bros, ahead of its scheduled full release in early 2024. While MultiVersus is offline, players can still access the game’s training room and local matches, and they can use any unlocked characters and cosmetics in any game they wish. Any progress made by players will be carried over once the game is available again in 2024. However, if players want to tinker with offline features, they must download the game from the digital storefront before April 4, 2023.
According to an official FAQ page, players will not receive refunds due to the closure, which may be frustrating for those who spent money on a game they cannot play online for months on end. “We have a clearer view of what we need to focus on, especially the tempo of character content, maps, and new modes to give you more ways to enjoy the game, along with updated netcode and more matchmaking improvements,” said Tony Huynh, CEO and co-founder of MultiVersus developer Player First Games, in a blog post. “We’ll also be overhauling the progression system based on your feedback and looking for new ways for you to connect with your friends in-game.”
Warner Bros.’ MultiVersus game was first launched in July 2022, and despite being popular at first, the number of players has since plummeted. The closure of the open beta version is hoped to give the developers some breathing room to create a more enticing game. However, considering the challenges many live service games have faced recently, Player First Games still has a tough fight ahead.
