In One Piece episode 1080, “Patriot our site,” Eiichiro Oda gives a hint as to why Marshall D. Teach, also known as Kurohige, became the strongest in One Piece. In this episode, we learn that Kurohige and his crew have aspirations to become rulers of the island Hachinosu and make it a recognized kingdom by the World Government.

Through a recent One Piece spoiler, we see a flashback of Kurohige and Captain Coby. Kurohige is interested in using Coby as leverage to negotiate with the World Government. However, Coby reveals that he is a member of SWORD, a secret organization of former Marines who have resigned and returned their codes. Aokiji explains that SWORD can attack Yonko without the approval of the World Government and are not bound by any superiors’ commands. SWORD, however, is not accountable to the Navy, and they can even be disbanded by them.

Despite the explanation by Aokiji and Coby, Kurohige remains adamant about using Coby, who holds the title of hero, as a means to threaten the World Government to make him a ruler in One Piece. That’s why he had kidnapped Coby.
