Understanding Yuta’s Unique Approach to Jujutsu in Jujutsu Kaisen

Posted on

Jujutsu Kaisen is currently at the edge of the brutal and loss-filled Culling Game arc which has brought trauma to many characters. Every fight focuses on the theme and philosophy behind a sorcerer’s drive. Yuji Itadori’s fight revolves around his past crime of unleashing Sukuna in Shibuya and the need to redeem himself. Megumi Fushiguro pushes his limits to become stronger to save his stepbrother. However, Yuta Okkotsu’s fight in Jujutsu Kaisen 0 is unique among the other sorcerers. The film shows how Yuta is different, and this article explains why.

1. Yuta is Characterized by His Relationships with Others
In Jujutsu Kaisen 0, Yuta evolves from wanting to die alone to being driven to live and use his powers to protect those he loves. Unlike Yuji and Megumi, who prioritize individualism, Yuta’s focus is on the connections he has created with those around him. Yuta wants to be surrounded by people he loves to gain validation for his abilities. He believes he is only worthy of continuing to live if his friends see him in that light as well. Yuta is the most shonen-like character of the three, with the power of Nakama (friendship) being his driving force.

2. Yuta is Still Growing Emotionally

As a character, Yuta still has to develop more empathy. His empathic nature does not align with the current moral code of the world. Yuta’s approach to Jujutsu battles is unique because he is the only one among the three who seeks to understand his opponents’ motives. He is shocked when he discovers that his opponents are not fighting for their loved ones. Yuta’s individual emotions still cloud his judgment sometimes.

3. Yuta Has Different Priorities

Among the three characters, Yuta is the only one actively seen protecting the innocent from the Jujutsu system’s collapse. His devotion to his friends causes him to fight in weakened conditions to protect others, something that is rare for a Jujutsu sorcerer. While Satoru Gojo and Maki Zenin prioritized individual strength, Yuta’s approach to fighting challenges the Jujutsu system’s individualistic mindset. Yuta chooses to have meaningful bonds with people and does not seek to become a strong sorcerer alone.

In summary, Yuta Okkotsu’s unique approach to Jujutsu in Jujutsu Kaisen is a philosophical, empathetic, and individualistic one. His approach challenges and opposes the Jujutsu system’s individualistic mindset, which prioritizes cold, aloof, and unempathetic sorcerers. Yuta’s focus on relationships and humanity is what makes him truly unique and stand out from his peers.
