Queen Seondeok tells the incredible and inspiring story of the first woman ever to rule South Korea. The series is based on actual events that took place in Korea in the seventh century. At that time, women were not allowed to wield any political power, but Queen Seondeok rose to the throne in an era when the kingdom was being threatened from both within and without. The TV series was a major hit in 2009, and it won multiple awards. However, it was also at the center of plagiarism accusations, which led to its being banned from airing again.

The story of Queen Seondeok begins when King Jinpyeong, the father of Queen Seondeok, has only twin daughters as his heirs. Since only men are allowed to take the throne, he decides to name one of his daughters as his successor. Seondeok is eventually declared the rightful heir, which causes much friction among those vying for power. Meanwhile, another woman in the king’s court, Mi Shil, has designs on the throne for herself and sets out to usurp the queen’s power.
