Easy A is a 2010 coming-of-age teen movie that tells the story of Olive (played by Emma Stone). Olive, a high school student, finds herself at the center of a vicious rumor after telling a white lie about her weekend plans to her best friend Rhiannon (played by Aly Michalka). The rumor eventually spirals out of control and Olive finds herself being labeled as a promiscuous girl.
The movie explores themes of gossip, sexuality, and identity as Olive navigates her way through the drama that unfolds around her. The movie is directed by Will Gluck and stars some of Hollywood’s finest young actors.
The movie begins with Olive spending her summer vacation mostly indoors listening to music by Natasha Beddingfield. Olive’s best friend Rhiannon invites her on a family vacation but Olive makes an excuse claiming that she has a date. When Rhiannon asks her about her weekend, Olive lies about her date saying that she lost her virginity to a college guy.
Unfortunately, Marianne (played by Amanda Bynes), a religious fanatic, overhears the conversation and spreads the rumor throughout the school. Olive’s reputation is tarnished and she becomes an outcast. Olive decides to let the rumor run its course, but things get even worse when she starts to wear provocative clothing and a red A (the “scarlet letter”) on her attire as she is inspired by Nathaniel Hawthorne’s book “The Scarlet Letter”.
As a result, a group of boys in the school start approaching Olive seeking to increase their social standing by having sexual relations with her. One of the boys who approaches her is Brandon, who is bullied for his sexual orientation. Olive agrees to stage a sexual encounter with Brandon as a favor to him so that he would be left alone by the bullies. The rumor mill then suggests that Olive has made a habit of having sex with everyone, which further ruins her reputation.
Meanwhile, Rhiannon’s boyfriend Micah has contracted chlamydia and tells Marianne that he got it from Olive. This leads to Marianne leading a crusade against Olive and wanting her expelled from school. However, things start to get better for Olive when she goes out on a date with Anson, and their romance helps her overcome the stress associated with the rumors.
The movie is a true depiction of the harsh realities of high school life. It highlights the role of rumors and social media in ruining someone’s reputation. The storyline is relatable, and the characters are well-written and believable. Olive, in particular, is a strong and charismatic character who is easy to root for.
In summary, Easy A is a funny, thought-provoking, and entertaining movie. It deals with serious issues such as bullying, sexuality, and the social dynamics of high school life in an engaging and relatable way. This movie is perfect for anyone who wants a good laugh while also reflecting on the complexities of teenage life.
