In the horror film Case 39, the demon you meet will surprise you as it does not come in a typical form. Directed by Christian Alvart, the movie tells the story of a seemingly innocent little girl, who turns out to be extremely dangerous and a threat to those around her.
Renee Zellweger plays Emily, a social worker who takes care of troubled children and their families. One day, her boss Wayne gives her a file on a girl named Lilith Sullivan or Lily, who is reported to have serious issues. Emily visits Lily’s home and talks to her parents—Edward and Margaret—only to notice that Lily is quite distressed while her parents exhibit odd behaviour.
When Wayne tries to investigate further, Lily’s parents insist that their family is alright. However, when Emily talks to Lily alone, the little girl reveals that she heard her parents planning to kill her. When Emily tries to record their conversation, Lily says nothing is wrong. Despite her doubts, Emily is forced to return Lily to her parents due to a lack of evidence.
However, Emily senses that something is not right and gives Lily her phone number. One night, Lily calls Emily for help, saying that she is in danger. Emily contacts Mike, her detective friend, and rushes to Lily’s house where she finds Lily’s parents trying to kill her by putting her in the oven. Emily and Mike manage to save Lily, and her parents are arrested and sent to rehabilitation centres as they are deemed crazy.
Lily is supposed to stay in a shelter, but she pleads with Emily to let her stay with her instead. Emily agrees and is initially happy to take care of Lily. However, she starts to find some important clues during her investigation. When she visits Lily’s parents in jail, they reveal that Lily is a demon who can kill those around her. They believe that the little girl can only be killed to stop her from killing others. Emily begins to experience odd events and witnesses the deaths of many people around her, including Doug, her lover and Lily’s psychologist.
Emily then concludes that she must get rid of Lily and begins to try to prove that Lily is indeed a demon. However, Lily becomes angry and unleashes her demonic powers on Emily’s friends, almost killing them all. Emily then plans to burn her house down to trap Lily, but it backfires as Lily survives the fire and ends up beside Emily. However, when Emily confronts Lily, the demon loses her power, and Emily is able to kill her by driving their car into a big river.
The horror genre of the movie is evident throughout the film. The cinematography, sound effects, and overall aura of the movie are spooky, and the scenes are mostly in dark tones, giving it a haunting ambience. The movie also has numerous jump scares, keeping viewers on the edge of their seats. Jodelle Ferland’s portrayal of Lily is worth mentioning as she delivers a captivating performance that steals the show.
In conclusion, Case 39 is a horror movie that tells the story of a little girl possessed by a demon. It is filled with terrifying scenes, jump scares, and an excellent cast that portrays the characters perfectly. Overall, it is a perfect movie for horror enthusiasts and curious moviegoers who want to experience something different.
