Synopsis:
Batman Returns is a classic action crime fantasy movie that was released in 1992. It is a sequel to the commercially successful live-action Batman film released in 1989. Tim Burton directed the film, and it features Michael Keaton once again as Bruce Wayne. The strangely dark story captivates the audience with its beautifully crafted depiction of the character.
The Plot
The story revolves around a wealthy businessman, Max Shreck, who proposes to create a new power plant in Gotham. However, Mayor Roscoe Jenkins and Bruce see the proposal as unnecessary and decline the proposal. Shreck tries his best to win the support of the people, but his speech is interrupted by the Red Triangle gang, who kidnap him to the sewers.
In the sewers, Shreck sees people dressed like the Red Triangle gang and a figure who looks like a penguin. This figure, later identified as Oswald Cobblepot, is the leader of the Red Triangle gang and holds evidence of Shreck’s criminal activities. Penguin wants to make a name for himself and blackmails Shreck to boost his reputation.
Further down the plot, Selina Kyle, Shreck’s secretary, discovers that the power plant is dangerous and could give Shreck an unfair monopoly, and tries to stop him. Shreck pushes her off a building in an attempt to silence her, but she survives and takes on the alias Catwoman to seek revenge on Shreck.
Meanwhile, Penguin saves the mayor’s kidnapped baby, using this heroic feat to make himself more prominent in the eyes of the Gotham citizens. Bruce investigates Oswald and discovers that he may be the missing member of the now defunct Red Triangle gang.
Penguin then decides to run for mayor after being pushed by Shreck, but Bruce foils his plans, and Penguin ultimately dies.
The Characters
The film features several great actors who give striking performances. Michael Keaton as Bruce Wayne/Batman is impeccable, delivering the stoicism and aloofness that the character requires. Danny DeVito as Oswald Cobblepot/Penguin is a grotesque version of the villain, commanding every frame he appears in.
Michelle Pfeiffer’s perfect portrayal of Selina Kyle/Catwoman is a joy to watch, effortlessly switching between the duality of her character. Max Shreck, played by the late Christopher Walken, is the typical villainous businessman that Walken so perfectly embodied.
