Bukan Cinderella (2022) is a romantic teen movie starring Fujianti Utami and Rafael Adwel. The movie tells the story of Amora Olivia, who is a lucky student to be enrolled in MEJ School. However, despite being in the lucky category of MEJ School students, Amora is constantly late and often seen cleaning toilets, resulting in her being placed in the less-prestigious 11 IPA-7 class. One day, Amora gets into a fight with Adam, and both are sent to the guidance counsellor’s office. Later, Ardi asks Amora to come to the Osis room without any objections, or else he will punish the entire 11 IPA-7 class for their misbehaviour. To stop Ardi, Eka threatens him with a video of him smoking that could ruin his reputation if it were to go public. Eka demands that Adam shoot Amora in the school cafeteria to stop the video from being leaked. Adam reluctantly agrees, but as he spends more time with Amora and eventually falls in love with her, Adam realises that he has conflicting feelings about carrying out his promise.

The idea of “hate turns into love” in a Cinderella storyline is quite common among movie or drama lovers. However, despite how typical the storyline may be, the writer for Bukan Cinderella failed to provide a fresh take on the idea. The film combines the Cinderella fairy tale with the “hate turns into love” storyline, but the result is a poorly executed collaboration.
The “hate turns into love” storyline is the best part of the film. The story of a cold and arrogant head of Osis who falls in love with a lower-class student is relatable and engaging. However, the writer failed to address several plot holes in the storyline, making it an imperfect execution.
The Cinderella element of the film is a great disappointment. It is unclear why Amora Olivia is considered a Cinderella figure in the movie. Is it because Amora goes to an elite school but is placed in a lower-class class or because she dated the head of Osis but still maintained her humble nature? It is never fully explained.
Conclusion
Bukan Cinderella may seem like a refreshing take on the typical “hate turns into love” and Cinderella fairy tale, but sadly, it fails to live up to expectations. The storyline is not as polished as it could be, and the Cinderella element is poorly executed. Overall, the film seems like a missed opportunity for the debut of Fuji in the Indonesian film and acting industry.
