The Predator franchise continues to grow commercially, with the release of yet another installment, The Predator. The movie features a change in the position of the producer and director, with the director being a supporting actor in the first Predator movie. In this fourth installment, a Predator comes to Earth to carry out a different mission, which is explored in the film’s synopsis and review below.
The movie begins with a spacecraft carrying a Predator landing in Mexico, followed by a U.S. Army Ranger team carrying out a hostage rescue mission. During the mission, Quinn McKenna, a U.S. Army Ranger sniper, witnesses his teammates being attacked by the Predator. Despite the Predator’s effort, McKenna succeeds in taking its armor and sending it to his home. He does this to prevent the U.S. government from finding out about it.
The U.S. government captures him and takes him to be tested. During the test, the Predator that McKenna killed is taken to a laboratory by a government agent named Will Taeger. Casey Bracket, a biologist, is hired to examine the Predator in the lab. She discovers that the Predator has human DNA and begins investigating how the two DNA strands became fused.
The Predator in the laboratory awakens and attacks the lab staff. Bracket manages to escape unscathed, as she was the only person in the lab without a weapon. Meanwhile, McKenna is detained alongside other hostages. While in transit, they take over the prison bus when they see the Predator escaping from the lab. McKenna takes Bracket with him as they flee to his home.
McKenna’s wife, Emily, informs him that their autistic son Roy is currently wearing the Predator’s armor to protect himself from bullies. Roy triggers the armor’s signal, which brings the Predator to McKenna’s home. After a fight, the Predator is killed by McKenna while Nebraska, one of the hostages with McKenna, kills the Predator’s dog.
Afterwards, a second, larger Predator appears and engages the first Predator in battle. The other characters flee and Bracket discovers that the Predators have been seeking human DNA to enhance their genetic code. She also discovers that the larger Predator is resistant to most forms of attack.
McKenna and his team go to an abandoned barn, where the government captures them. Traeger, a government agent, reveals that the Predators want to use human DNA to create hybrid creatures. Roy is then abducted by the Predators, who believe he has the perfect human DNA for their experiments.
Development of the Story:
The Predator franchise revolves around the battles between humans and extraterrestrial creatures, and this is also true for this latest installment. However, the story has been developed further, with the introduction of smaller and larger Predators. The movie also explores the relationship between father and son, and the tension between McKenna and the U.S. government.
In addition, The Predator features a fast-paced storyline, which jumps straight into action. The characters are not deeply explored or developed, making it difficult to have a strong emotional connection with them. Nevertheless, the brutal action scenes, which are the hallmark of the Predator franchise, are still present in The Predator, and the use of CGI and special effects are well done.
Conclusion:
The Predator is an action-packed movie that continues the Predator franchise story with a new twist. The movie features strong visuals, impressive special effects, and thrilling action scenes. Despite its fast-paced storyline and comparatively underdeveloped characters, it still manages to entertain its audience.
