Romantic-Comedy anime has always been popular among anime enthusiasts. Aside from the amusing and entertaining love stories, it also tackles the complexities of communication. Some RomCom anime characters have similarities in their communication problems, namely Komi from Komi Can’t Communicate, Gojo from My Dress-Up Darling, and Izumi from Horimiya. Let’s take a closer look at these characters and how they overcome their communication challenges.
Komi is a beautiful girl admired by everyone, but unknown to many, she has communication syndrome. She never talks to anyone and has no friends due to her inability to communicate verbally. She communicates through sign language or writing. Despite being aware of her weakness, Komi never gave up on making friends. Her classmate, Todano Hitohito, became her friend. He helped Komi achieve her goal of making 100 friends, and their intense communication brought them closer to each other. Komi’s character is similar to Gojo’s from My Dress-Up Darling.
Gojo is an introverted teenage boy who never had a friend. He lives with his grandfather and learned how to make hina dolls since he was a child. Because he became too obsessed with making dolls, he forgets to socialize and explore other things. One day, he met Marin, his cheerful and popular classmate who is also a cosplayer. Despite being a classmate, Gojo is still a silent teen who finds it hard to make friends. Marin discovered Gojo in the sewing room and from that day, they became friends. Their relationship is getting closer, and they gradually learn how to communicate with each other.
Izumi, from Horimiya, also shares similarities with Komi and Gojo. As an SMA high school boy, Izumi was thought to have a gloomy life. He was bullied by his classmates since middle school, causing him to become a quiet and lonely person. Hori, his classmate, pretty, and popular among other male teens, met him outside school while picking up her younger brother. From that day, they became friends and got closer until they finally became a couple. Hori’s presence in Izumi’s life changed his personality and social life.
In conclusion, RomCom anime has unique characters that portray relatable communication issues. Komi, Gojo, and Izumi overcame their challenges in their unique ways. They reminded us that it’s okay to have flaws and make progress at our own pace. We can learn from these characters who, despite their difficulties in communicating, gained real and long-lasting friendships.
