One Piece Manga to Go on Hiatus Due to Creator’s Eye Surgery

One of the most popular manga series of all time, One Piece, is set to go on hiatus for one month starting from June 19 to July 18, 2023, as creator Eiichiro Oda undergoes surgery for astigmatism. The announcement regarding the hiatus was made by Anime News Network, citing Oda’s need for the surgery as it has been causing blurred vision, affecting his work. Oda and his editor decided on the surgery last year after he took a break from the series for a month.

This is not the first time Oda has put One Piece on hiatus for medical reasons. Last year, the manga also took a break for one month to allow Oda to complete the end of the story arc and work on the film, One Piece Red.

One Piece debuted in Weekly Shonen Jump magazine back in July 1997 and has been ongoing ever since, following the adventures of pirate Monkey D. Luffy as he searches for the “One Piece,” a legendary treasure left behind by Gol D. Roger, the king of the pirates. Luffy and his crew, the Straw Hat Pirates, sail the seas under the Jolly Roger flag, dreaming of becoming the Pirate King.

Despite Oda’s surgery, fans need not worry as the series is expected to resume publication after the one-month hiatus period. Fans can also enjoy One Piece in various formats, including the manga, anime series, and occasional film adaptations.

Last year, the film One Piece Red was released in Japan, and it became the eighth highest-grossing film of all time in the country. This year, fans can look forward to the live-action adaptation of the manga, which will be available on Netflix.

In the meantime, readers can catch up on the latest One Piece manga installment, Chapter 1085, on various online platforms such as Manga Plus, a website and app that offers the latest manga releases from Shueisha, the publisher of One Piece.
