As the events unfold in One Piece chapter 1087, Monkey D Dragon’s untimely arrival and Vegapunk’s fate are revealed. The chapter starts with the revelation that Dragon had prior knowledge of the Navy’s plan to destroy Egghead Island using the Buster Call. However, despite having accurate information about the Navy’s movements, Dragon was late to anticipate the attack, and both Vegapunk and his son Luffy became victims of the assault.
In the previous chapter of One Piece, Dragon held an emergency meeting with Sabo and Ivankov to discuss the World Government’s invasion using the Buster Call on Egghead Island.
Unexpectedly, Dragon arrived too late to save Vegapunk, as by the time he reached Egghead Island, the island had disappeared from the map. This begs the question: What caused Dragon’s delay? Did Luffy, Vegapunk, and the Straw Hat crew perish due to the Buster Call?

Following the attack on Lulusia Kingdom by the World Government using the “Mother Flame,” the destructive power of the Buster Call is demonstrated once again on Egghead Island. The Navy, led by Admiral Kizaru under the command of Gorosei Saturn, arrives at Egghead Island. They unleash the Buster Call from a distance of 300 meters from Vegapunk’s headquarters. Not staying idle, Luffy and his crew prepare to fight back. The Straw Hat Pirates try to sink the Navy’s ships one by one. However, it turns out that Vegapunk has a different plan in mind.
Having completed his preparations, Vegapunk instructs them to let the Navy carry out the Buster Call on Egghead Island. He believes that his mission is already accomplished, and there is nothing worth defending on the island anymore. In fact, he has even shrunk and stored his brain, the Punk Record, in a suitcase. Vegapunk intends to temporarily erase his existence by letting the World Government assume he is dead. The scientist then escapes with Luffy and the Straw Hat crew through a route prepared by Vegapunk from the beginning.
Vegapunk’s calculated actions reveal that his choice to let Egghead Island be destroyed by the World Government was part of a well-thought-out plan. He knows that if he was discovered alive and together with the Straw Hat Pirates, he would never have peace to complete his research on the energy source he dreams of. Therefore, Egghead Island is left to be annihilated by the Navy’s Buster Call.
During the Buster Call, Dragon suddenly arrives with his army. He is furious because this is the second time he has witnessed the Buster Call happening right in front of him. Dragon even assumes that Luffy and Vegapunk have perished due to the attack. He shouts out Kizaru and Gorosei Saturn’s names with such intensity that the sky trembles and splits. Although Kizaru appears slightly panicked, he is secretly pleased with Dragon’s arrival. On the other hand, Gorosei Saturn smiles, as if their mission to eliminate Vegapunk and his research has been accomplished.
The chapter concludes with Gorosei Saturn and Kizaru returning to the new Marineford headquarters. Meanwhile, Dragon intends to pursue them, but Sabo urges him to prioritize the search because he believes that Luffy and the others are still alive. In the final panels of One Piece 1087, Vegapunk is seen smiling happily while celebrating on Luffy’s ship.
