On March 9th, One Piece fans celebrate the birthday of Akagami no Shanks, the mysterious Pirate Yonkou. The character’s every movement is shrouded in mystery, thanks to the creative mind of mangaka Eiichiro Oda. Despite the many theories surrounding Shanks, Oda has his own vision for the character and the story of One Piece.
Akagami no Shanks, also known as “Red Hair Shanks,” is the leader of the Red Hair Pirates and one of the Four Emperors (Yonkou) who rule over the New World in One Piece. Shanks began his career as a pirate on Gol D. Roger’s ship before forming his own crew following Roger’s death. During an operation in the East Blue 12 years ago, Shanks sacrificed his left arm to save his young friend, Monkey D. Luffy, from drowning in the sea.
Shanks is also renowned for giving Luffy the Gomu Gomu no Mi fruit, accidentally inspiring him to become a pirate himself. He gave Luffy his iconic straw hat as a promise to meet again someday. Today, fans celebrate the birthday of this beloved and enigmatic character, and look forward to the continued adventures of the One Piece story.
