Synopsis

Habibie and Ainun met each other in high school, but they pursued their own dreams after graduation. Habibie furthered his education in Germany, while Ainun became a doctor. When they meet again as adults, Habibie falls in love with Ainun, and they decide to get married. Habibie takes Ainun to Germany, where he works and earns his doctorate. They live a simple life, and their happiness is complete with the birth of their child. But after completing his education, Habibie wants to work in Indonesia but is initially rejected.

Years later, Habibie is called to work in Indonesia, and he accepts. However, he leaves Ainun and their children in Germany. In Indonesia, Habibie initiates a project to develop the country’s airplane manufacturing industry, which faces many challenges, including corruption and bribery. Nevertheless, Ainun supports him unconditionally. Habibie’s work in the industry finally pays off when the first Indonesian-made airplane takes flight in 1995.

Habibie’s life becomes much more complicated when he is appointed vice president after Soeharto’s resignation as President. During this time, Indonesia undergoes a severe economic crisis. Although Habibie becomes the President of Indonesia after Soeharto, Ainun becomes more and more ill and eventually passes away.

Review

The movie does a great job of showing the personal side of BJ Habibie’s life. The portrayal of his love for Ainun, an intelligent woman who supports his ambitions, is heartwarming. Their relationship is worth emulating. Habibie’s personality is also highlighted well, from his humor to his strong will to succeed.

The breathtaking visuals of the film, combined with an excellent script and talented actors, make it a powerful movie that will leave you moved and inspired. Reza Rahadian and Bunga Citra Lestari deliver outstanding performances as Habibie and Ainun, respectively.

However, the film is not without its flaws. Some scenes feel too rushed, especially Habibie’s battle with corruption and bribery in the airplane manufacturing industry. The film could have spent more time building these scenes to give a better understanding of the difficulties Habibie faced.

Conclusion

If you are looking for a romantic and inspiring movie based on a true story, Habibie & Ainun is a must-watch. The movie does an excellent job of telling the love story between two remarkable people and highlighting BJ Habibie’s legacy. Although the film has a few flaws, it is a touching tribute to a great leader and his loving wife.
